Golden Globes Wish List

Let’s be honest, the Golden Globes is kind of stupid idea.

A group of 85 people (The Hollywood Foreign Press) who have ZERO crossover with any other awards voting body, get together and give out awards to the biggest names in Hollywood. Yet, each year we act like we care. I also don’t like the fact that even though the awards mean nothing, they really do have an impact on a movies momentum leading up to the Oscars.

I would love not to care about the Golden Globes, but they have the world’s best hosts in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, so I care more than I can possibly express. I plan on watching their opening on repeat for the next week, no questions asked (It will give BEYONCÉ a break).

Though the whole premise of the Golden Globes is pretty stupid, I do have a wish list I would love to see be fulfilled on Sunday night.

1. Monica (FREAKING) Potter // Parenthood

Parenthood is arguably one of televisions best shows, and also televisions most overlooked show. How could the Emmys watch Potter take on Kristina Braverman’s battle with breast cancer and then act as though it never happened? They weren’t watching, that is the only logical explanation! Though I don’t love the Globes, I love the fact that they noticed her and now (hopefully) she is in the Emmys view. Potter not only gave the most haunting and heartbreaking performance during her character’s battle with cancer, but she then came back this season with conviction and courage as her character ran for mayor. Potter is one of the best actresses on TV right now, and I would love nothing more than for the Globes to acknowledge this fact.

2. Emma Thompson // Saving Mr. Banks

Sandra Bullock’s performance in Gravity flawless, Cate Blanchett is PHENOMENAL in Blue Jasmine, and Judi Dench is pure perfection in Philomena, but Thompson rises to the surface in this stellar category. I don’t really have words to describe how much I loved her performance. All I can think about are the tears running down my face during the scene where Thompson’s character is introduced to the kite song from Mary Poppins. The movie itself is fantastic, but it is Thompson’s performance that steals the whole show. To watch her character break down over the course of the movie is a treasure not to be taken for granted.

3. Lupita Nyong’o // 12 Years a Slave

This is my favorite cinematic performance of the year. This newcomer will be around and nominated until the day that she dies, and we will always talk about her first performance. The Globes shouldn’t miss their chance to honor this acting genius at the beginning of her journey.

4. Let it Go // Frozen

Frozen will easily win the award for Best Animated Feature Film, and one of the reasons it will do so is because of the brilliant music throughout the film. This song is arguably the best, and the Globes would be wrong to award anything else.

5. Kerry Washington // Scandal

If the Hollywood Foreign Press watches Scandal, they will not get this one wrong. Washington gives phenomenal, jaw-dropping performances each and every week. The Emmys chose not to give her the awards, but that doesn’t mean that the Globes can make the same mistake.

6. Amy Poehler // Parks and Recreation

Poehler has never won a Golden Globe or an Emmy. Here’s to hoping that the Globes make things right this year for their hysterical host.

7. Parks and Recreation

The Emmys continue to snub the best comedy on television, and frankly it has become exhausting. Are voters watching the same show that I am? The Globes have a change here to create some much needed momentum for my friends in Pawnee. DON’T GET THIS ONE WRONG, HOLLYWOOD FOREIGN PRESS!

8. The Mindy Project

Is it possible for the 2nd best comedy on television to get an award it is (wrongly) not nominated for? Can Mindy Kaling share the award with Amy Poehler? Both of these are impossible? Well, shame on the Hollywood Foreign Press for choosing the wrong Fox comedy as their “shocking” nominee!
